Gupta brothers arrested in Dubai over alleged corruption in South Africa – Business owners at the centre of a scandal that led to former president Jacob Zuma’s resignation
ਭਾਰਤੀ ਮੂਲ ਦੇ ਭਗੌੜੇ ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰੀ ਰਾਜੇਸ਼ ਤੇ ਅਤੁਲ ਗੁਪਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਯੂਏਈ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਭ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਕੇਸ ਵਿਚ ‘ਮੋਸਟ ਵਾਂਟੇਡ’ ਅਪਰਾਧੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸਨ। ਇਸ ਕੇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ਦੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਜੈਕਬ ਜ਼ੁਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਹੁਦਾ ਛੱਡਣਾ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ। ‘ਇੰਟਰਪੋਲ’ ਨੇ ਰਾਜੇਸ਼ (51) ਤੇ ਅਤੁਲ (53) ਖਿਲਾਫ਼ ਰੈੱਡ ਨੋਟਿਸ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ। ਜਾਂਚ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ’ਚੋਂ ਫਰਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਸਨ।’ ਜ਼ੁਮਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਜਕਾਲ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ’ਤੇ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਮਾਲਕੀ ਵਾਲੀ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਦੇ ਅਰਬਾਂ ਰੈਂਡ (ਸਥਾਨਕ ਕਰੰਸੀ) ਲੁੱਟਣ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲੱਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਪੁਲੀਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਰਾਜੇਸ਼ ਤੇ ਅਤੁਲ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ’ਚ ਦਰਜ ਮਨੀ ਲਾਂਡਰਿੰਗ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੇਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ’ਚ ਕਾਬੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਖਣੀ ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਸੋਮਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਅਰਬ ਅਮੀਰਾਤ (ਯੂ.ਏ.ਈ.) ਵਿਚ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਮੂਲ ਦੇ ਗੁਪਤਾ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ (ਰਾਜੇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਅਤੁਲ) ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਜੈਕਬ ਜ਼ੂਮਾ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਭ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਸਨ। ਦੋਵੇਂ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਬਈ ‘ਚ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਫਿਲਹਾਲ ਇਹ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੀਜੇ ਭਰਾ ਅਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰੀ ਇੰਟਰਪੋਲ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਸਾਲ ਜੁਲਾਈ ‘ਚ ਗੁਪਤਾ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਨੋਟਿਸ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਲਗਭਗ ਇਕ ਸਾਲ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਪਤਾ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਲਾਭ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਉੱਚ ਅਹੁਦਿਆਂ ‘ਤੇ ਨਿਯੁਕਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਜੈਕਬ ਜ਼ੂਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਬੰਧਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਹੈ। ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋਸ਼ਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਗੁਪਤਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ 2018 ਵਿਚ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫ਼ਰੀਕਾ ਵਿਚ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ-ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਅਦਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਅਰਬਾਂ ਰੈਂਡ (ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫ਼ਰੀਕੀ ਮੁਦਰਾ) ਦਾ ਘੁਟਾਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਸਵੈ-ਨਿਰਵਾਸ ਵਿਚ ਦੁਬਈ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫ਼ਰੀਕਾ ਦੇ ਨਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਬਿਆਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਨਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਮੰਤਰਾਲੇ ਨੇ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਯੂ.ਏ.ਈ. ਦੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੂਚਨਾ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਭਗੌੜੇ ਰਾਜੇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਅਤੁਲ ਗੁਪਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਮਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਅਰਬ ਅਮੀਰਾਤ ਅਤੇ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫ਼ਰੀਕਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਏਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਦੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਲਈ ਚਰਚਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਹੈ। ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਫ਼ਰੀਕਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਯੂ.ਏ.ਈ. ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਕਰਨਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖੇਗੀ।
The South African authorities said on Monday that Rajesh Gupta and Atul Gupta, were arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The Gupta brothers are accused of benefitting from their ties to former South African President Jacob Zuma and wielding undue influence, claims they have categorically denied.The brothers are wanted for graft, fraud and money laundering and an Interpol Red Notice was also issued for them. They were accused of swaying powerful government appointments, winning contracts, siphoning off state finances, and misappropriating state assets.Mr Zuma was in power from 2009 until 2018 when he was forced to resign due to a barrage of corruption allegations. In 2018, the Gupta brothers fled South Africa after a judicial commission began probing their involvement in corruption following Zuma’s ouster.Officials from South Africa claimed they were in talks with the UAE about extradition and negotiated an extradition deal in 2021.The South African Department of Justice and Correctional Services said in a statement on Monday, “The ministry of justice and correctional services confirms that it has received information from law enforcement authorities in the UAE that fugitives of justice, namely Rajesh and Atul Gupta have been arrested.”The statement added that law enforcement agencies in the UAE and South Africa are discussing the way forward.
